So what is ”hygge”? There has been a lot of books on that subject recently, but let me try to give you a brief explanation. ”Hygge” is sitting under a blanket looking out at the rain. It is having dinner at home with some good friends. It is reading a book in front of the fire. It is meeting with an old friend for a cup of coffee. It is going to the movies with someone. Well, not a very good explanation, but I’m sure you get the idea by now. In fact, I’m sure that everybody in the whole world do things like this, so most likely the main difference is that Danes have a word for it. Just like kids sometimes make up words to express something or say something that doesn’t make sense gramatically, but definitely explains something very clearly. Like ”I’m so full of happy today”.
